governor romney is going to win ohio this year. host: both of them have been there numerous times to the president just 15 times this year, 30 times since he has taken office. tell me about ohio. caller: ohio is a class a purple state, well balanced between democrats and republicans, a microcosm of the country in the sense that you have blue caller workers, you have -- however, the state is older, probably more caucasian, a little white r. it has really been hit by the economic downturn, especially heavy industry. both sides think they have a real shot at winning the state. i think in the early going, the obama campaign scored well on their class warfare argument. that is one of the staples of the obama campaign, "you are not doing well because this guy in his career is doing too well." now i think the public is beginning to understand that it is the bad economic policies of this administration that is causing everybody to do less well than they should. so i think now mitt romney and paul ryan are starting to pick up. host: what kind of ground game do you need to pick up ohio? gue

with lz, it was a bit of both. there was a lot of both. president obama was way off and mitt romney was very much on his game. you know, i don't remember many debates where it's hard to think of a memorable gaffe or a memorable knockout blow, and yet there was a very visible mark of undebatable victor of this debate, which was mitt romney. he did it just because for 90 sustained minutes it was like he was debating a limp piece of spaghetti. >> it was like the chair from clint eastwood. but i want to go a little longer with this segment to talk more with these guys. this is some honest talk. let's talk about the job numbers, they couldn't have come at a better time with the president considering his performance the other night, how big of a help is this below 8% jobless rate, do you think? i'm going to start with anna to see what the republicans think about that. how big of a help? because mitt romney can no longer go, well, the unemployment rate is above 8%. >> absolutely it was a help. and it was a solid vote for president obama on friday, the day just after this disastrous debate.

the encouraging spin on the debate which goes to that point. both candidates, president obama and governor romney, said good things about simpson bowles. of course, neither one of them embraced it. but the other thing that happened, and it hasn't been emphasized as much as i would have thought, i think we have some creeping candor going on in terms of the structural deficit situation. governor romney made it clear that he's going to have rate cuts but not tax cuts. he's talking about revenue neutral reduction in rates. that's a $5 trillion change just in one debate. and on the other side, president obama, this was a dog that didn't bark, in effect, because usually democrats talk about medicare and social security in a way that indicates they would never do anything about it. president obama, to his credit, did not do that. so i took some encouraging spin from those things during the debate. >> if you're encouraged, then we're encouraged. >> something that congress can build on. that may give people in the congress working together a little more ammunition. >> very good. thank you, senator. good t

of some of the things that president obama said. right now the $5 trillion tax cut both of them argued over is in a new ad the romney campaign put out this morning because the romney campaign feels they need to clear up what president obama is saying about it, which is that it's not true. >> how forgiving is the american voter if president obama had what he would claim is just a bad night? >> it's hard to say. what will have to happen is president obama will have to have a much better debate in new york, about a week and a half away. i've talked to a lot of democrats and big obama fans who are miserable about the president's debate performance because they think he did a bad job and might have ruined his chances. >> why do you think that was? >> you know, part of it was president obama's strategy. he wanted to come in looking presidential. david axlerod says in a conference call this week with reporters that the president didn't want the american people to see two candidates on stage insulting each other and for that reason he stayed above the fray but he needed to look for aggressive.

the main, underlying story lines for both candidates. so, for joe biden, does he reinforce this idea that the white house is kind of tired and out of ideas? that's what the romney campaign has been pushing. for ryan, does he underline this idea that the ticket is basically hiding their true beliefs and their true numbers? if either one of those does that, then it carries on the story line. otherwise, it's just sort of fodder for a couple of days, but it just essentially disappears. >> john, there's a generation gap between the vice president and the congressman. how do you think that will affect the tone of the debate, if at all? >> reporter: well, it will be an interesting thing to watch. you can imagine it affecting the tone in terms of remember when geraldine ferraro debated george bush, there was a gender gap in that case, and she snapped back at him when he seemed to be patronizing on the question of foreign policy. there could be a situation here where joe biden could look sort of a little, you know, look, sunny, and that would end up being kind of a gaffe. but i think other th
